Jesus said, "If ye shall ask anything in my name, that will I do."
"That," says E. M. Bounds, "is the Divine declaration, and it opens a vista of infinite resources and possibility."
Throughout his ministry, Bounds rose early every morning to pray for three hours. Out of this deep prayer experience, he could say, "Without prayer, the Christian life, robbed of its sweetness and beauty, becomes cold and formal, and dead; but in the secret place where God talks with His own, the Christian life grows into such a testimony of Divine power that all men will feel its influence and be touched by the warmth of its love...That, surely is the purpose of all real prayer and the end of all true service."

We've been reading through this in our men's group for several weeks now. Mr Bounds seems like he might be a lot like me in some respects. That is, he seems to get caught up in trying to make his point and at times gets a bit carried away. After taking afront at some of his hyperbolic excesses, I'm either becoming immune to them, or indoctrinated; it's hard to be sure which. His point is good tho; pray... when you're done with that pray some more, and then when you've wrapped that up, start praying some more. :)
A wonderful exhortation, skillfully presented. The language, although a bit dated, is very enjoyable, perhaps because no one really writes or speaks like that today.

Purpose in Prayer (Audible Audio Edition) EM Bounds Scott Harrison Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews
This book gave me more insight to the meaning of prayer. Prayer is based on faith - the desire, belief and expectancy. The author tell us about the energy of prayer, how and why we must be persistent in prayer, and the results that are possible due to prayer. You can create you own results (miracles) by praying (if you know how and why).
Even if you don't take time to read this book, at least learn to how / when to pray and learn what to expect. God wants to be our friend. He ask us to go to our secret place (inside) and talk with him. Who knows? You might see the miracles (results) in your life if you pray nonstop, giving thanks and praise and "asking (the right way) so you can receive (thy will be done)".
Good book about the purpose in prayer. Prayer moves the hand of God on our behalf. God shapes our world by prayer. The more praying there is in the world the better our world will be.
God wants us not to be slack in our prayers, but pray without ceasing. The secret of success in Christ's Kingdom is the ability to pray.
"Purpose In Prayer" by E.M. Bounds focuses on the real purpose of prayer being that God's children will grow in the likeness of Him.
Among the points covered include
1. The secret of success in God's kingdom is prayer.
2. God is willing to give but we are slow to ask.
3. Christians fail to get their prayers answered because they do not wait on God.
4. God delights to hear us pray.
5. The people who do mighty things for God are often mighty people of prayer.
6. There is a strong connection between an obedient life and answered prayer.
7. The person who truly prays gets things gets many things from God that the prayerless person doesn't get.
8. Praying people must be strong in hope, faith, and prayer.
A great, encouraging, and challenging read.
Highly recommended.
Bounds classic work on prayer is more than I could have hoped it would be. There has never been a book which has so immediately had such a large effect in my life. The number of books which I can point to and say, "That book largely affected who I am as a Christian today," are few. But even so, the number of books that I can point to and say, "After reading only a few pages, my entire Christianity shifted for the better, and the next day, I was a different man," are singular. This book is that book. I do not know if it is that way for many people, or if God simply decided to use this work to affect me greatly, nonetheless, I think this book would be exceeding beneficial for any believer to read.
Book thesis Prayer is the keynote of the most sanctified life, of the holiest ministry; he does the most for God who is the highest skilled in prayer.
The thesis is supported, but not in argumentative, syllogistic fashion. Rather Bounds' writing emerges from one whose life has been profoundly affected by prayer and has seen its effects elsewhere. Anyone who has the Spirit residing within him will resonate with the words in this book, knowing that they are true even with the lack of researched deliberation. Bounds' "research," so to speak, is his life. Although, it should not be thought that Bounds does not appeal to Scripture. Nor that he is solitary and unique in his consideration of prayer. At the beginning of each chapter, Bounds includes quotations from notable men of Christian history and some remarks they make concerning prayer--such men as Spurgeon, A.J. Gordon, and D.L. Moody. He also interlaces accounts throughout his chapters, showing the importance prayer has played in such men's (and women's) lives. Furthermore, Bounds does frequently refer to Scripture and its contents--whether it be the teachings of Jesus, the life of Jesus, the prayers of Paul, or the wrestling of Jacob.
The chapters are brief, thirteen in all, and adding to a total of 160 pages (in my old edition). But if you are anything like me, they will be some of the most life-changing words you ever read. I recommend this book to all Christians, young and old, mature and immature, and I pray (literally) that the words of Bounds come into the lives of countless other Christians, and that the subsequent prayers of those Christians bring the kingdom of God to bear upon the earth in a way not yet seen.
EXCELLENT BOOK! CANNOT ACCESS ON KINDLE!
A good book, but a tough read! The writing is badly dated and at times a little hard to understand. I had to re-read several parts of it several times to really get a full understanding of what it was saying. It is full of good ideas and I recommend it!
